RALEIGH, NC – Charlotte native Jiadira Alexandra Choque Fernandez, a senior at Belmont Abbey College majoring in Elementary Education, received a $2,500 Blumenthal Foundation STEM Scholarship from the Independent College Fund of North Carolina (ICFNC).
Since its inception in 1953, the Blumenthal Foundation has focused the majority of its grants on programs and projects that have an impact on Charlotte, and the state of North Carolina. Over the past 50 years, the Foundation has given a total of $188,400 to ICFNC, a division of North Carolina Independent College and Universities (NCICU). Recipients must be Mecklenburg County residents with financial need who are majoring in education and plan to teach science, technology, engineering or math. A first-generation college student, Jiadira is the first member of her family “to ever step foot on a college campus.”
“The Blumenthal Foundation’s scholarship helps develop our prospective teachers and expands the critical pipeline for science and math teachers in our classrooms,” said ICFNC Director Colleen Kinser. “We are deeply grateful for the Foundation’s continuing support over so many years.”
