What is a nurse practitioner?
A nurse practitioner is physician extender with an advanced degree. Physician extenders are either certified nurse practitioners (NPs) or physician assistants (PAs) and are licensed by the State Medical Board to provide medical care. They may evaluate and manage acute care or routine health problems, order laboratory tests or x-rays and if necessary prescribe appropriate medications and do health and wellness counseling.
