Wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access for public areas at BAC

What is the BAC Wi-Fi network?
Wi-Fi computer networking technology allows laptop computers and PDAs to send and receive internet data via a wireless network. Currently we are beta testing IEE 802.llb and IEE 802.11g standard wireless network in the student commons and surrounding areas. If your laptop computer is Wi-Fi enabled, there are many areas on campus where you can connect to the internet wirelessly.

Is there an access fee?
No, Belmont Abbey College is providing this service free of charge to the community. However, individuals must have their own equipment, wireless card and software.

Is the network secure?
Belmont Abbey College Wi-Fi access is as secure as any open public access network. It is always a good idea to make sure that you have a local firewall turned on and that your antivirus and system software is up to date. It is also a good idea to make sure you are on an SSL-encrypted web page prior to sending or receiving confidential data. Belmont Abbey College assumes no risk for any viruses, identity theft, or any other malicious or unwanted activities, which can occur to individuals accessing a public network.

What equipment do I need to access the network?
You need a laptop/notebook or PDA equipment with a standard Internet browser and a Wi-Fi compliant (802.11b or 802.11g) wireless Ethernet card. In most cases, the card will be installed in the PC card slot on the side of the computer and will be loaded with the appropriate software.

Where can I buy a Wi-Fi card?
Wi-Fi compliant (802.11b or 802.11g) wireless Ethernet cards are available from most major electronics retailers in-store or online.

How do I connect to the network?
Check to make sure your Wi-Fi software and card are properly installed and turn on your computer. Then open your web browser. You should see your normal "home page". Now you are ready to surf. No passwords. No fees. No limits.

Belmont Abbey College reserves the right to monitor Wi-Fi activity; filter content and otherwise control or prohibit usage.
