Abbey Students Assist Elementary Schools with Relief Belmont Abbey College Education Students Partner with Belmont Central for Katrina Relief

BELMONT, NC --- As New Orleans’ French Quarter begins welcoming its first visitors, thousands of people are still forced to live like refugees following Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Relief efforts remain on the minds of many across the country – as agencies and individuals attempt to address the needs of Mother Nature’s youngest victims – the children.

Nearly 100 students from the Abbey’s Education Department and Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, have banded together in collecting school supply donations for elementary schools in the Gulf area.

More than a dozen of the Abbey students will meet with others at Belmont Central Elementary School at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 to package the donations and prepare them for shipment.

“This was an effort we felt we could contribute to,” says Pam Wilson, assistant professor of Education at Belmont Abbey College . “All of the students have expressed enthusiasm and dedication to meeting the needs of children outside of our immediate community. We are all very proud of their efforts.”

Wilson, along with Dr. Melinda Ratchford, Sheila Ingle, and Bennette Sutton, worked with the Abbey’s students in raising more than $1,000 in school supplies that will be shipped to the Red Cross and distributed to an elementary school in need. The Abbey partnered with Belmont Central Elementary School in Belmont , North Carolina for the project.

Included in the relief donations are various supplies including, pencils, crayons, glue, rulers, and other items.
