‘Arts at the Abbey’ Takes Musical Journey in Time
Carolina Pro Musica To Perform at Belmont Abbey College
BELMONT, NC --- Audiences will travel back to medieval times when Carolina Pro Musica performs “Medieval Muses” as part of Belmont Abbey College’s Arts at the Abbey Concert Serieson March 27, 2006 at 8:00 PM in the Abbey Basilica, Belmont Abbey College. Admission is free and open to the public.
The program will feature music by medieval women mystics and poets – female troubadors and trouvéres, dances, and other selections dating back to the 11 th century. The performance will include sacred and secular music, Hildegard, Blanche de Castille, La Comtessa Beatriz da Dia, and various anonymous composers.
Carolina Pro Musica is a period instrument and vocal ensemble, which specializes in performing music written before 1850. Founded by Karen Hite Jacob in 1977, the group performs many historic presentations and features such instruments as 18th century flute, recorder, viol and harpsichord, plus many medieval instruments, including krummhorn, hurdy-gurdu, harp and shawm.
The ensemble, which consists of Karen Hite Jacob, harpsichord; Rebecca Miller Saunders, soprano; Holly Wright Maurer, viol; and Edward Ferrell, recorder and flute, will be entering their 29 th season this year.
