Abbey alum Luis Lobo ’83, president for BB&T’s Washington Metropolitan Region, will discuss his book, It Is Your Attitude, on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 7:00 PM in the Student Commons at BelmontAbbeyCollege.
The event is co-sponsored by Belmont Abbey College and BB&T. Admission is free and open to the public.
Lobo has treaded professional ground that few Hispanics have to become regional president of Branch Bank & Trust (BB&T) Potomac Region. His leadership has helped propel the Potomac Region into the company's top 10 performers among 37 regions. His many commendations include being chosen by Minority Business Enterprise Magazine as one of 50 most influential minorities in the United States in business for 2004.
But Lobo says that writing the book "was never a commercial interest."
"It was my way of communicating some of my life's events coupled with broad observations over the last 20 years in the banking industry," says the 44-year-old executive.
It Is Your Attitude covers a variety of subjects, including "how and why people fail or under perform; how to address setbacks when they occur by putting events into perspective; recognizing what is motivating your actions; dealing with fear of failure; 10 practical tips for improving your attitude, and a real-world case study that shows the difference attitude can make within a business community.
Lobo says that ultimately, he believes people fail for several reasons. They may have a sense of entitlement and believe, even after a series of setbacks, that success will be served to them on a platter.
"They may have also been given a false example of what it takes to be successful, and when they employ this method they fail because the template is unethical or not based on reality," says Lobo. "People driven by this fear are so focused on doing everything possible to avoid a setback that they lose balance with their personal, familial and spiritual lives. I know this type of person well. I have seen him in the mirror for 40 years."
Lobo, who is currently president for BB&T’s Washington Metropolitan Region based in Washington, D.C., is also chairman of BB&T’s Emerging Markets Council. BB&T (Branch Bank and Trust) is the ninth largest bank in the U.S. with 1,450 branches in 11 states. Lobo’s career has involved most facets of commercial, retail, mortgage and international banking in the past 22 years.
A native of Costa Rica in Central American, Lobo was raised in Lincolnton, North Carolina and earned degrees in economics and business administration in 1983 from Belmont Abbey College. He later earned an MBA from Campbell University and received his degree with honors from the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware in 1998. He also graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Advanced Management Program in 1999.
A former president of the Professional Latin American Association in Norfolk, Virginia, Lobo serves as chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He is also on the Advisory Board of the American Bankers Association Stonier Graduate School of Banking and the Consumer Bankers Association Policy Committee. Lobo lectures extensively at colleges, universities and financial industry forums across the U.S. on “Change Management,” “Leadership,” and “Sales Culture.”
Lobo is on the faculty of the BB&T Banking School at Wake Forest University and the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown University. He has been featured on NPR’s Marketplace and national and regional publications. Minority Business & Professional Network named Mr. Lobo one of the 50 Most Influential Minorities in Business in the nation in 2004. In 2005, Belmont Abbey College inducted him into its inaugural Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame. He was named Apex Citizen of the Year in 1993.
