This year’s World Youth Day in Germany.
The 20 th annual World Youth Day is the largest Catholic youth gathering in the world, providing participants, ages 16 through 30, an amazing opportunity to worship, learn, and celebrate with one another. The event, which will be hosted in three cities – Cologne, Bonn, and Düsseldorf, begins August 16 (through August 21) and consists of over 500 events that include festivals, concerts, meetings, social discussion forums, and more.
Organizers from the Archdiocese of Cologne promise an appearance by Pope Benedict XVI during the festival of faith.
“Through this pilgrimage the students and I will be blest by the opportunity to grow in our faith through the global community of our brothers and sisters in Christ,” says assistant director of Campus Ministry, Corein Brown, who will be accompanying students from the Abbey. “The impact of this trip will go far beyond our own personal experiences and we look forward to returning home and sharing our experiences.
Students from the Abbey who will be attending this year’s World Youth Day are Sophomores Anthony Flora, Jessica Hanson, Erica Mistretta, Patrick Haller, and Junior Heather Woody.
Brown says the group has been excited about the international event for over a year and spent much of that time fundraising and personally preparing for the pilgrimage.
“While in Germany, we will be able to attend a number of small faith sharing groups, cultural events, and learn more about our host country,” says Brown. “We are also excited about celebrating Mass with Pope Benedict XVI, and see this as an opportunity to represent Belmont Abbey College and the Diocese of Charlotte on an international level.”
