NASCAR has experienced several rain delays this season that has forced them to reschedule events.  Rain costs money.  What are the costs associated with rain delays?  Remember to look at alll factors and stakeholders involved.

Hi JB-

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! First, allow me to say that rain delays are not very much fun, but can be interesting as you never know what is going to happen when you are hanging out with a bunch of guys in the hauler.

To answer your question: Rain delays definitely cost money - for the teams, fans, tracks, and sponsors. When a rain delay happens, the team has to pay for an extra night of hotel rooms for all team members, has to give the team members an extra day of per diem, and must rearrange flight schedules and rental cars. For the fans: the first factor with rain delays is if the fans can even stay another day. When a Sprint Cup, Nationwide, or Craftsman Truck race gets moved to Monday, most fans are not able to stay, as they have to return to work/head back home. Normally, there is nowhere near as big of a crowd on Monday as there would be on the actual race day. If the fans do stay, they have to have pay for another night of hotels and food. If they aren’t able to stay, the fans have lost part of their money they spent on the ticket. For the tracks: the tracks have to refund part of the ticket money for the fans that are unable to stay and they lose money on concession/merchandise sales (as not as many fans show up). For the sponsors: Most people would not think of the sponsors losing money, but if the race gets moved to Monday, not as many people are in the stands and watching it on television; therefore, the sponsors are not getting as much exposure as they would when the race schedule stays intact.

Thanks!
Sam
