EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING GUIDELINES:
Application for Experiential Learning Credit and information packets are
available in the ADP Office.
College Rule: Maximum 30 hours academic credit for advanced placement and
college-level learning acquired in non-traditional setting.
See registrar first regarding military-sponsored training.
Must have completed one full semester and be currently enrolled to apply
for Experiential Learning Credit.
Must submit portfolio within the first two weeks of each 8-week session of
the Fall or Spring semester for credit to be assessed and credit to be awarded
that semester.
Students are advised to apply for experiential learning prior to your last
semester. Requests for Experiential Learning Credit submitted during the last
semester of your Senior year will not be accepted.
Resubmissions of denied requests may not be assessed until the following
semester.
The cost for Experiential Learning credit is $60 per credit hour.
Please separate portfolios by department when applying for Experiential Learning
Credit. Make three copies of each request: one for the ADP Office, one for the
Department Chair, and one for your own records. Submit all copies to the ADP
Office.
Note: If planning to transfer or go on to graduate school, Experiential Learning
credit hours may not be accepted because they come with no grade.
Guidelines for Business Department:
BU Department Rule: Maximum of 8 of the 17 courses required for major (and
5 of the 11 upper level courses - BU 300 and above) transferred or awarded as
experiential learning credit.
Each 12 hours non-college coursework = 1 credit hour of experiential learning
credit
No experiential learning credit for BU 406 or BU 407.
BU 461 - BU 469 are awarded as general electives for courses not offered
at Belmont Abbey College.
College Level Learning Must:
Be measurable and at a level of achievement defined by faculty as consistent
with students engaged in college studies.
Be applicable outside the specific context in which it was learned.
Be reasonably current and have a knowledge base.
Show some relationship to your degree/lifelong learning goals.
Not repeat learning for which credit has already been awarded.
Recommendation: Students are advised to apply for experiential learning prior
to your last semester. for Experiential Learning Credit submitted during your
last semester of your year will not be accepted.
Complete an "Application for Experiential Learning Credit" form for each course
for which you seek credit. (Photocopy the form if needed.) Typing is preferred.
A. Activity/Experience: These experiences could include non-college courses,
seminars, job training, travel or work experience which can be equated to college
level learning. Be sure to include time spent in activity.
B. Selection of Courses: Credit is limited to courses listed in the current
Belmont Abbey College Academic Bulletin Only. Indicate discipline area if you
are unsure of a specific course.
C. Competencies/Learning Outcomes: You must demonstrate some form of course
assessment or competency as a result of finishing the course/training/life/work
experience. Indicate how you think the particular activity/experience meets the
course requirements for which you are applying. If applying for Experiential
Learning credit for a course offered at Belmont Abbey College, other than a course
number and description designated as "Experiential Learning Credit", you will
need to refer to a textbook and course syllabus for particular information that
is covered in the course.
- Show evidence of growth and learning.
- Identify when and where the learning occurred. For example: sponsoring organization,
employer, volunteer agency, etc.
- Indicate the amount of time (hours) spent on non-college course work, both
in class and on outside assignments.
D. Documentation: Attach documents to support each activity listed on the "Application
for Experiential Learning" form. It is the student's responsibility to document
that they have met the specific requirements as identified in a textbook and
syllabus for a specific course. Examples of supporting documents: job descriptions,
supervisor evaluation form, personnel record, form DD-214, certificates of completion,
certificates of attendance, published articles, work samples, copy of course
syllabus, etc.
Submit two (2) completed sets of information to include the "Application
for Experiential Learning Credit" form(s) and supporting documents to the Director
of the Adult Degree Program. Please also make a copy for your records. The
Director of the Adult Degree Program will submit the completed "Applications
for Experiential Learning Credit" forms with supporting documentation to the
appropriate Department Chair.
Students must submit Application for Experiential Learning Credit to the director
of the Adult Degree Program within the first two weeks of each 8-week session
of either the Fall or Spring semester. Credit for Experiential Learning will
not be reviewed during the summer months. Completed "Applications for Experiential
Learning Credit" with supporting documentation, will be distributed to the appropriate
Department Chair(s) after the second week in each session. Department Chair(s)
are given the full semester for evaluation. If credit is approved, it will be
posted at the end of the semester in which the student submits the "Application
for Experiential Learning Credit". (Please note: not all departments work on
the same time table and evaluation may take longer than one semester). The Business
Office will bill the student $60 per credit hour awarded. Resubmission of Denied
Credit: Credit that has been denied cannot be resubmitted until the beginning
of the next session.
