Theatre Minor
The minor consists of 15 hours above and beyond the Fine Arts requirement for the core curriculum. These courses can be spread out over the four years in which the student is enrolled. Students are asked to select either an artistic or technical track at the outset of the minor, and will then take appropriate courses in acting, directing, theatre history (artistic) or stagecraft, light, sound and set design (technical). During senior year, the student will participate in a practicum, as the minors collaborate to stage a main-stage production as part of the Abbey Players’ season.

Belmont Abbey College Theatre
The Abbey Players provides the student actor/technician with ample opportunity to work. We produce six main stage productions each year in the Haid Theatre, including an annual Shakespeare play as part of our Shakespeare at the Abbey Series, now in its 16th season.

The theatre company itself is one of the oldest in the Southeast, and is currently performing its 123rd season. Our student performers/technicians have been accepted at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the American Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in New York, the Milwaukee Repertory Company, Second City in Chicago, M.F.A. programs in design at such institutions as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and have worked professionally at outdoor dramas, commercial production and various other venues.

The Abbey Players’ shows have been featured as part of the Charlotte Repertory Theatre season (Charlotte’s only LORT company). In addition to his work as Technical Director for the Abbey Players, Gary Sivak is the sound designer for the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, recognized nationally for its superior work, and has designed sets, lighting and sound for every professional company in the area.
Artistic Director Simon Donoghue is an award-winning director, playwright and actor, and has held his position at the College since 1976.
Jill Bloede, M.F.A., is a regionally-renowned actor, director and teacher. She is currently on-staff at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte as a director, performer and instructor.
While work with the Abbey Players has led a number of students to show business careers, the goal of student involvement is aimed at producing literate, active supporters of the performing arts. It is an invaluable component of Belmont Abbey College’s mission to educate young men and women who will make vital contributions to their future communities.
