BELMONT , NC --- Belmont Abbey College will step into the national spotlight before the checker flagged is waved at one of the biggest NASCAR events of the year.

Belmont Abbey College ’s Chancellor, Abbot Placid Solari, O.S.B., will offer the invocation at the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord , North Carolina on Sunday, May 29, 2005 .

The nationally televised event is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. EDT on FOX. The race is set to start around 5:40 p.m. and can also be heard on the radio on the Performance Racing Network (PRN). NASCAR fans will also be treated to performances by finalists from the television show, American Idol.

Abbot Placid, a native of Virginia , is head of the monastic community at Belmont Abbey and teaches at Belmont Abbey College . A graduate of Bellarmine College , he holds a Roman doctorate in patristics (the study of the theologians of the early Church), and has translated major works of scholarship in his field. Not only does Abbot Placid act as spiritual father of the monks and instruct the youngest monks in the Rule of Saint Benedict, but he also manages the monastery’s business affairs and resources. An active member in the community, he is well known for his compassion and the discernment of his judgments, serving the Benedictines in this country as a visitator and a member of special commissions.
